RbC Glossary

RbC uses  phrases and words that may be new to you or which have meanings that are particular to this Facilitation method. For your convenience we have created this page to assist you!


A Design is the structured plan for the complete session. It is created by the RbC Facilitator, working with the Owner (and sometimes others).

The Design includes all of the details of a session. This would be the objectives, types of participants, activities, activity deliverables, breaks, stop/start times, types of activities, sub groups of participants, Form Templates, Environment design, etc..

The Design governs the sequence of events in the Session.


Emergence refers to the existence or formation of collective behaviors — what parts of a system do together that they would not do alone.

A Learning Community can operate as a system and exhibit collective behaviors.

Emergence is the opposite of reductionism which is breaking something into its component parts and seeking to understand the function of each.

Emergence is considered part of the field of study into Systems, Chaos, Complexity, and Networks. It includes the study of complex living systems and what we can learn and apply to human organizations.

An Exercise is a period of individual or group work within a Session.

An Exercise consists of a selected Activity designed to create an environment for emergence within the participants.


Instructions are the specific directions on how participants are to conduct an Exercise, including any questions to be considered.

Knowledge Transfer

One of the many activity types that can occur during a Session.

This activity usually involves a presentation of information followed by an analysis and feedback activity.

The purpose is to bring participants to a common understanding or focus.

Learning Community

A learning community is a group of people who share common goals and attitudes, who meet semi-regularly to collaborate on classwork.

A learning community would initially consist of the participants in a session but would further develop as they met together in subsequent sessions.

Community psychologists such as McMillan and Chavis (1986) state that there are four key factors that defined a sense of community: “(1) membership, (2) influence, (3) fulfillment of individuals needs and (4) shared events and emotional connections.

So, the participants of learning community must feel some sense of loyalty and belonging to the group (membership) that drive their desire to keep working and helping others, also the things that the participants do must affect what happens in the community; that means, an active and not just a reactive performance (influence).

Besides a learning community must give the chance to the participants to meet particular needs (fulfillment) by expressing personal opinions, asking for help or specific information and share stories of events with particular issue included (emotional connections) emotional experiences[2].


A model is a description of a concept or idea. 

Models are recommended concepts or ideas based on proven collaborative principles, that when applied, result in the creation of a full and robust experience by participants.


The goal or purpose of the Session as defined by the Owner of the Session.

The RbC Facilitator creates a Design based on the Objective.


The customer “owner” of the Session and the results of the session.

This individual meets multiple times with the RbC Facilitator before a planned Session.

Together they develop the Design with the RbC Facilitator applying their knowledge and experience with Facilitation.


An individual that participates in a Session.

While in the Session the individual may be grouped with other individuals during activities.

The individual is the most important component of the Session because it is they along with the other Participants who produce solutions in accordance with the Objective.


A Session is an event of fixed length and defined by the Design. A Session has a Design, Participants, Owner, Objective and various Activities.

The Session is not a fixed length and may last for four hours, or four days.

RbC is the method used to lead the Session.
